The review article is devoted to the most important aspects of the diagnosis and treatment of acute varicothrombophlebitis (AVTP). In spite of advances in diagnosis and treatment AVTP, the frequency of its severe complications remains too high. The most serious patient’s life threat is the spread of a blood clot in a deep vein (BCDV) with development of fatal pulmonary embolism (PE). Preventing these complications is achieved by conservative and surgical treatment. In spite of the existing methods of treatment among the authors there is no consensus about the tactics to prevent thrombosis and its complications. Analysis of the literature showed that only surgical prophylaxis of TDV and PE at AVTP without subsequent anticoagulation is unreliable and safe. Therefore, a comprehensive approach in treatment of AVTP with up-to-day anticoagulant therapy and preventive crossectomy can effectively prevent its fatal complications.

Keywords: acute varicothrombophebitis, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism.
