The results of epidemiological study conducted in 2008-2011of 1504 people (704 - persons in prisons of the republic and 800 people - at liberty) have shown the rate of HIV infection (19.8%), hepatitis C (31.0%) and syphilis (10.0 %) in prisons higher than at liberty (11.5%, 28.5% and 11.0%, respectively), which is to some extent related to injecting drug use in the absence of adequate access to individual syringes and condoms.

Serology shown reactivation of hepatitis C and hepatitis B virus DNA integration in the liver cells genome are most typical for III and IV stages of HIV infection. These circumstances suggest the progression of chronic liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis or primary hepatocellular carcinoma, followed by death.

HIV and viral hepatitis among prisoners have most acute currency than at liberty due specific conditions of penitentiary system and, above all, a way of life and behavior of prisoners to facilitate the implementation of mechanisms for transfer of the above infections.
