Objective: To evaluate the safety and cosmetic effectiveness of SGR performed during facelift surgery through conventional periauricular incisions.
Methods: A literature search was conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, eLibrary, and Google Scholar for publications from the past 10 years using the keywords “facelift”, “rhytidectomy”, and “salivary gland resection”. Studies were selected if they assessed the impact of SGR on cosmetic outcomes and reported associated complications. We excluded studies that did not address aesthetic outcomes or were outdated.
Results: The review showed that submandibular gland resection is considered relatively safe and provides favorable aesthetic outcomes with a low complication rate. However, fewer data are available regarding parotid gland resection, and complications such as salivary fistulae have been reported. Advanced surgical techniques, including endoscopic and robot-assisted procedures, provide improved outcomes.
Conclusion: SGR may represent a promising adjunct to aesthetic facial surgery; however, further studies are required to confirm its safety and effectiveness
Keywords: Facelift, rhytidectomy, salivary gland resection, plastic surgery.
