FOLLICLE IMPLANTATION TECHNIQUE IN AUTOLOGOUS HAIR TRANSPLANTATION
Russian Biotechnology University (ROSBIOTECH), Moscow, Russian Federation
Objective: To develop and present a protocol for improving aesthetic outcomes during surgical treatment using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method in patients with stage III-IV androgenetic alopecia according to the Norwood-Hamilton scale by taking into account the direction and angle of hair growth.
Methods: The study was based on direct physical measurement of the hair shaft exit angle, a retrospective analysis of surgical outcomes, and a survey of 52 patients who underwent surgery in 2022-2023 (patent application RU No. 2024136143). All patients were male, with a mean age of 35 years (range: 25 to 63 years), and underwent hair transplantation using the FUE and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) techniques.
Results: Each area of scalp hair cover has specific characteristics of hair shaft growth, and the implantation of autografts in accordance with physiological parameters improved patient satisfaction with surgery (according to survey results, in which patients separately assessed the naturalness of the final aesthetic outcome). The number of highest-scoring responses in the questionnaire increased by 19.7% after the introduction of this technique.
Conclusion: The use of a technique that accounts for the direction and angle of hair growth in the transplantation area, along with the patient's individual characteristics, should be adopted by every physician performing hair transplantation to improve surgical outcomes.
Keywords: Androgenetic alopecia, hair transplantation, FUE, DHI.
