Gulov Makhmadshokh Kurbonalievich was born on January 1, 1966, in the Republic of Tajikistan. In 1989 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU). After completing the internship and residency in surgery at the General Surgery Department No. 1 of the ATSMU he was elected to the position of Assistant Professor of the aforesaid department in 1995, Associate Professor in 2003, and Full Professor in 2007. He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 2005 to 2009, and Deputy Rector for Research and Publications of the ATSMU from 2009 to 2016. From 2016 until the present he is the Rector of ATSMU.
The research interests of Professor Makhmadshokh K. Gulov cover a wide range of issues of general, abdominal, endocrine, and colorectal surgery. He developed new approaches to diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of early surgical complications of gastric resection for "difficult" duodenal ulcers. He proposed a new classification of complications of liver echinococcosis and established new mechanisms of pathogenesis of acute adhesive obstruction of the small intestine, liver failure with obstructive jaundice, and portal endogenous intoxication in experimental obesity. He developed and introduced new surgical approaches in the surgical treatment of liver echinococcosis and its complications, acute retrorectal paraproctitis, cholelithiasis, and coccygeal pilonidal sinus. He promoted new sparing methods of thyroid surgery, gastric and duodenal ulcers and their complications, acute intestinal obstruction, and liver echinococcosis. Professor Makhmadshokh K. Gulov was actively introducing kidney transplantation in the Republic of Tajikistan, and he is deservedly recognized as one of the founders and experts in this field.
Professor Makhmadshokh K. Gulov is a Member of the Association of Surgeons of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Association of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeons of the CIS countries, the Russian Transplant Society, the Russian Society of Colorectal Surgeons, the Editor-in-Chief of the "Avicenna Bulletin", a member of the editorial boards and editorial councils of the medical and pharmaceutical journal "Pulse", journals "Medical Bulletin of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan" and "I.P. Pavlov Russian Medical Biological Herald". Professor M.K. Gulov is the author of more than 300 scientific publications, 10 inventions and 55 innovative proposals, 8 monographs and teaching aids. He was a supervisor of 15 postgraduate students.
For outstanding achievements in the development and implementation of new methods of abdominal surgery and kidney transplantation, organization and development of abdominal and endoscopic surgery in the Republic of Tajikistan, and drug discovery from natural sources of Tajikistan in 2018 Professor Makhmadshokh K. Gulov was awarded the title "Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Republic of Tajikistan", in 2020 – the Abuali ibni Sino State Prize of the Republic of Tajikistan in Science and Technology, in 2021 – the E.N. Pavlovsky Prize of National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.
